Good for those kids. How awesome is that to see them get active about something they care about, not to mention the fact that he’s one of our good friends? It’d be great for Brad, those kids, and the school if something can be done to save his job. If he’s gone, who takes over the classes he’s teaching?
Seniority driven firing is one of the downsides of tenured positions. In some cases it forces you to keep on a teacher that isn’t optimal while getting rid of a new, motivated teacher that is performing above expectations and happens to be well liked by the students.
Apart from that, we wouldn’t even be talking about making these kinds of decisions if there wasn’t a budget issue. The state is cash poor, and the budget needed to be stripped and revamped, but it hits you particularly hard when it actually has to affect people’s livelihoods–especially a friend’s.
